History of ‘T Huys Dever: From Small House to Stately Mansion
‘T Huys Dever dates back to the 14th century and was built by the wealthy nobleman Reinier Dever. This castle is a keep (or “donjon” in Dutch), like many others in the coastal area of Holland. Most of them have disappeared, which makes Dever so special! The backside of Dever is flat, as it faced the marsh of the Lisser Poel and did not need to be as strong, as no danger threatened from that side.
In the early 16th century, there was a small house standing against the round front of what would later become the grand ‘T Huys Dever mansion. The mansion was expanded in the 1630s and became a large keep. However, due to poor foundations and neglect, a part of the mansion collapsed in 1848. The villagers of Lisse then used the stones for their own buildings. The residential tower’s roof also collapsed in 1962, but the sturdy walls remained standing. Restoration began in 1973, and now ‘ T Huys Dever has been renovated to its former glory and is open to the public. Visitors can explore the castle and learn about its fascinating history and authentic medieval artifacts.
‘T Huys Dever’s Defense System
One of the most impressive features is the castle’s defense system. The castle was built with thick stone walls and a moat that would protect its inhabitants from invaders. As you walk along the ramparts, you can imagine what life was like for those who lived in the castle and defended it against attackers.
